Not everything is black and white (but this time it is!)

Ok, i didn't realize it had been THAT long since the last time i wrote. *Sowwy*!

hmm, let's see...what have i been up to lately?

Well for starters, it was damn busy at work last month. Don't get me started, but i was all "HOLY HELL I CAN'T SEE THE LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL!".

Of course, i made it through alive, and have added a few more battle scars to my collection.

I've also been deep into the Twilight Saga (be still my heart) and i'm almost done the last book. Most of my free time has been (happily) occupied with this.

Of course i still spend a lot of time puttering around the house.

Just a few weeks ago, i decided to paint the bannisters in my house. Here's some pics of what it looked like before i started:

And then as i started to paint:

Here's an *almost* finished pic. I later painted the 2 end posts black.

So as i was finishing up the LAST COAT of black paint on the upstairs handrail, i DROPPED the can of paint.

Did you notice the colour of my carpet? It's white.

Yes, i dropped a can of BLACK PAINT down my staris.

My WHITE. CARPET. stairs.

I sat there in shock for a few minutes. Not believing what just happened and not sure what to do about it either. I finally stood up and ran to the kitchen (because of course, i too was covered in black paint) and grabbed armloads of paper towel. I tried to wipe the paint off my legs but i just pushed it around and made a bigger mess. I all but climbed into the kitchen sink to get the paint off my legs which by this time had a burning sensation - grrrreat!

I still didn't know exactly what to do, so i went outside to where Mat was vaccuming my car. I tried not to make eye contact with him as i stuttered something about him needing to go back and rent the steam cleaner again.

Pardon? Oh, did i forget to mention that Mat had just steam-cleaned the carpets the DAY BEFORE?

Well HA HA wouldn't you know it that his wife decided to spill paint on the stairs after instead of before he cleaned them.

Anyway, he asked me why and i said "there's no time to explain, just go". He didn't bite and asked "what happened?"

"i spilled paint" i replied in the smallest voice ever

"where?" Mat asked

by this point, Mat had started to walk towards the house with me walking backwards in front of him.

"on the stairs! Please don't go in there!!" i pleaded. "IT'S EVERYWHERE" i excalimed as i burst into tears.

But he wouldn't listen and opened the door to the house and saw the carnage.

"You have got to be kidding me" was all he said.

i just looked at the floor.

"well, the carpet is ruined. we'll need to replace it" he said.

Now, although i was upset about spilling paint everywhere, the thought of getting new carpets cheered me up a bit. I have wanted new carpets since we moved in, but didn't want to spend the dough. I still really didn't want to spend the money, but at least i'd have pretty new carpets!

Mat went upstairs (i thought he was mad and couldn't stand to be around me and the mess) so i started to try and mop of the mess with some more paper towels. It made things worse because apparently paper towels will absorb anything BUT PAINT. ugh.

Mat came back downstairs and like a doctor to a nurse started to make demands.

"ok, we need the shop vac, a bucket of water and some vinegar. You get the water, and i'll get the shop vac".

I stared at him blankly because i didn't know what he was thinking

"i looked it up on google and apparently this is how you get paint out of carpet" he explained.

i did as i was told and we started diluting the puddles of paint with water and vinegar and sucked it up with the shop vac. over and over and over again. We spent about an hour doing this and wouldn't you know it? the paint was GONE. i swear. you would not know that i had spilled black paint all down the stairs.

When it was all cleaned up, Mat stood up and said "please don't ever do that again".

I still can't believe that it actually happened and that it's actually gone.

So, what have you been up to lately?

Why do you read blogs?

I could never fully explain to someone when they asked me WHY i read blogs.

My explanation never came out right - non-bloggers never really understood.

One of the blogs i frequent wrote this post and it makes so much sense.

What do you think?

Final Sale

Last weekend Mat and i were at the Mall. We didn't have much of a reason to be there except to return a duplicate Christmas gift i had received.

As we were walking around "window shopping" a cute outdoor mat caught my eye. It was 50% off because it was quite "seasonal" although it wasn't exactly Christmas-y. It was of a sweet little bird on a branch with a few snowflakes floating around and "welcome" written at the top.

Since it had a 50% off sticker on it, i couldn't resist buying it for only $10!

As i made my way up to the cash, the cashier asked if that would be all (yes) and proceeded to tell me my total after tax.

I gave her my debit card, paid, and as the cashier was putting the receipt in my bag and handing the bag to me she said "Here you go, just to let you know, this is a final sale".

I gave her an are you kidding me? look and said "You should tell people that BEFORE they buy it".

She looked at me with a blank stare and didnt' say anything - i'm not sure she understood what the problem was.

I probably wouldn't have returned the mat anyway, but if i DID want to, do you think i would have been able to seeing as she didn't tell me it was final sale until after i bought it? Probably not seeing as she stamped the receipt with a red "final sale" stamp.

Some people are kinda dumb, aren't they?

tee hee

So last week i ordered something online and i have been patiently waiting for it to arrive.

Yesterday, there was a hang tag on my front door from Fedex - they had tried to deliver my order but i wasn't home. They wanted me to sign the hang tag so that they could leave my order there tomorrow if i wasn't home.

I couldn't wait until tomorrow so i called them to arrange to pick it up myself.
As i was speaking to the Fedex agent, he was gathering all of my information so that he could locate my order.

"Here it is" he said. Then he paused and said "Wait.............did you order a Dwight bobblehead??"

i replied: "Umm.....yeah.....and a Michael bobblehead, did they not arrive together????"

Fedex agent: "That's awesome!"

Howdy

Hi there, howdy, welcome, ola...

Happy New Year Everyone!

First, an apology - there is no excuse for the tremendous lack of posts except that i'm lazy. I admit it - i always have admitted to being lazy. Don't know why i am, but i am.

Things have been going really well around these parts. I quit my last job which was a bit scary, but liberating.

Took 2+ weeks over Christmas.

Went to Phoenix to spend Christmas with a part of my family that i rarely see let alone spend Christmas with. It was so great! Such a break from our usual family get together at Christmas. I think our family really needed it. In 2007 our family lost 2 very important members within a week of each other. Tough times, and if we had tried to celebrate Christmas in the same settings with the same routines but without these 2 people, it would have been very sad and very strange. So thankfully our cousins out in Phoenix hosted us for a week or so.

After Christmas, we all travelled to Las Vegas for new years. SO FUN. Different, mind you, when you spend New Years Eve in Las Vegas with your 60+ dad and 70 (?) Uncle, but still fun and definitely an experience.

When we returned from Vegas, Mat headed back to work, while i still had another 3 days plus a weekend before starting my new job. Unfortunately, we were both sick and there was NO WAY i was calling in sick on my first day, so it was not an easy first few days, but I LOVE MY NEW JOB.

I'm doing what i love, i'm busy, i'm surrounded by smart, young, nice people. I have benefits coming out of the wazoo, i'm so SO happy i took the risk of changing jobs. Change is always hard, but almost always worth it.

I've been at my new job for 3 weeks now and did i mention that i love it? I did? ok, sorry.

Not much else is new around here - we've been doing a bit of painting in our house and had our dear "old" friends visit us from home-home in our new house. Love those guys! We had so much fun and they showered us with cool prezzies :) Can't wait for them to come back again!

Mat and i have almost narrowed down our choices for a venue for our reception. I'm so excitied! Now it really feels like a wedding is on its way. I can envision how the night will play out, and the people we'll see and the everything - getting really excited.

The only part of the wedding (besides $$, and god does it suck how much money weddings cost regardless of how many or how few people you invite) are the bridesmaid dresses. I don't want the "traditional" bridesmaid dresses where they all wear the same dress. I wonder if that's even traditional...

I told the girls that they could wear whatever dress they want so long as it was knee length and in the fall colour family such as red, orange, green, brown. At the time i envisioned this beautiful blend of fall colours, but now i'm worried that there will be too many colours with 3 bridesmaids all wearing a different colour and then mat and i obviously wearing different colours from that and then the groomsmens ties - gah! Must sit down with some magazines and a story board and figure this out before i go crazy!

Last, but certainly not least, my friend Meg just delivered her first baby girl. I am SO EXCITED for her and her husband - i can only imagine how happy they are.

I think that's it.

How are you guys?? I'm still reading your blogs, but not commenting that much as you can tell because i've been a bit busy.

Bye for now :)

Imaginary Friends

Have you ever had imaginary friends?

I don't know why this thought just popped into my head, but it really did "pop" out of no where. Seriously, i just leaned back for a stretch and into my head popped the thought of my sister's imaginary friends.

Yes, folks. My little sister had imaginary friends when she was little.

Is this strange to you? It is to me now that i think about it, but when i was little it never occured to me that this was odd.

In fact, i was quite jealous that she had imaginary friends and i didn't! I wanted so badly for her imaginary friends to also be my imaginary friends, but my sister said "no". Too bad for me, i thought.

My sister's imaginary friends' names were Tina and Ralphy. God knows where she got those names from. No one in our family knew of anyone named Tina OR Ralphy or anything close to those names.

Tina and Ralphy were brother and sister and they lived on the hill in our backyard.

Again, bizzare...i wonder now why they didn't live in the garage or in the sandbox or even in the car in the driveway that we never used. But no, Tina and Ralphy lived on the hill in the backyard.

I can't remember if Tina and Ralphy ever came inside the house to play. Probably, but then i'm sure they left when they were done playing to go back to the hill. Tina and Ralphy lived for many, many years.

My sister also believed in unicorns. Unicorns were her favorite "animal" growing up and she had everything unicorn. Unicorn figurines, unicorn stuffies, unicorn stickers, unicorn books. Everything.

Not only was this something that she collected, but as i mentioned earlier, she believed in unicorns. So much so that she promises that she saw a unicorn on our front lawn one day. Of course, she was the only one in the front yard when the unicorn appeared, but she kept stating convincingly that Yes. She SAW a unicorn. A REAL LIVE unicorn on the front lawn.

I'm sure she would kill me if she knew i just told everyone about her imaginary friends and her unicorn sighting but what are sisters for if not to remind each other of how nerdy and funny we once were?

*snicker

Approaching life with a different perspective

A few things:

I'm back after 3 long weeks on the road for work. I wanted to write while i was on the road but i was just so. darn. busy! Damn you, work!!!

So updates are all i can offer you my friends...

:::::

I've gained weight. It's not my fault i SWEAR. I was in Quebec City for a familiarization tour (if you have never been then get yourself on a familiarization tour!!) and in Quebec City, all they eat is c-u-i-s-i-n-e.

Only the finest ingredients go into the meals in Quebec City. I've never been to Paris, but i would imagine that it would be very similar.

Oh! the cheese, and the wine, and the tartar and more wine and more tartar. Every. Day!

Foie gras and champagne and sugar pies - oh my!

They certainly know how to eat in Quebec City. I'm sure they also know how to eat in moderation. Unfortunately, i do not.

::::::

On the same thread as eating, i recently read an article in the Globe and Mail about how a poor diet is directly linked to cancer. CANCER people. You can read the article here and i urge you to read it and ~ahem~ digest it.

For some reason, it hit home for me. I've always wanted to weigh less, but only because of vanity. Now, according to this article, you should be as lean as possible. On top of that, it says people should cut back on red meat, alcohol (all kinds!), processed meat (and i'm sure most other processed foods), fast food and high sugar foods.

Ok then. I've started eating as many whole foods as i can. We'll see how long i can keep this up. Now i feel like i need to lose weight. I don't want to get cancer. I want to be as lean as i can.

Mat and i have also decided to stop eating processed meat (or avoid it whenever possible). This is going to be a big challenge for us as we make sandwiches - with deli meat - almost every work day. This week we're eating tuna. After that, i'm switching to salmon. I love salmon, but Mat...not so much. He can't get past the bones-thingy and i don't blame him. They are pretty gross all crunchy and stuff.

Now before you all go waving your finger at me for eating so much tuna because of the mercury risk thing - i've done my research. The benefits of eating tuna far out-weigh the risks of mercury posioning. Same goes for pregnant women (i should know as i work for Ob/Gyns, Nurses and Midwives).

A little more on the food subject and i'll move on. I'm committing myself to drinking water. Again, guys - HUGE. For some reason i can't drink plain water unless i've just been exercising. I've always had to add crystal light. I've changed this. I am trying as hard as i can to get away from fake sh*t that i put in my body. The best trick i've learned is to put sliced cucumbers in my water. It tastes like i'm eating cucumbers when i drink water...amazing!!

Here's a breakdown of my resolutions (for your reading pleasure of course!)
  • No junk (except on the rarest of rare occasions)
  • No crystal light
  • No fast food
  • More veggies and fruits
  • No processed foods especially deli meat
  • No alcohol on a "regular" night (ie: no wine at dinner unless a special occasion)
  • Red meat only on rare occasions
  • Only chicken and fish and much smaller portions
  • Less honey in my morning coffee (i'm trying to train myself to enjoy things less sweet)

I think that's it. Oh, and i'll be continuing my gym routine at lunch time.

:::::

Mat is the most wonderful person i know. Mat, i'm sorry that i'm not capable of writing more eloquently, but i just wanted you to know that i truly appreciate everything you do.

You see folks, while i was away working / vacationing (ok, in my defense it was 90% work), Mat held down the house and looked after the two doggies without one complaint (ok, i think he complained once that it was lonely all by himself, but i'm not counting that). He was always awake when i would call him late because i kept forgetting about the time difference. He decorated the house for Halloween and handed out candy all by himself because i told him it was important to me that our house participated even though i wasn't home. The house was spotless when i came home. He did all of my laundry, made sure the fridge was full of groceries, picked me up from the airport - with the doggies -- on a work night - well past bedtime. Had flowers waiting for me at home, planned our anniversary dinner, then still gets up extra early to walk the doggies and make me lunch before he leaves for work so that i can sleep in.

I'm sure there's a few things i'm forgetting, but i am so lucky and so grateful that Mat is in my life and that *soon* i'll be able to call him my husband. I hope he feels the same about me...

Just as an aside, Mat and i celebrated our 9 year anniversary on Monday :)

:::::

I think that's all i have today. I do need to get some "work" done. I'm mentally drained, but hoping my new whole foods diet will help boost my energy and brain power.

I can't get this out of my head

Need your help guys (like, what else is new...) :)

I was watching Dragon's Den last night and there's a preview for next week's show.

They showed a clip of a woman promoting "Spice World".

As soon as i saw her i sat up and exclaimed to Mat "i KNOW her!!"

He looked at me and said "you KNOW her??"

"Yes!" i said but i couldn't remember from where. I searched every dark corner of my brain and finally the pieces came together: She has or did have a french cooking show.

There is one piece missing before i can sleep soundly at night. What's the name of the show???

Here's the bits of information i have:

  • I'm pretty sure it's a local Ottawa cooking show
  • It's in French
  • She and a man host it (not sure if it's her husband or just another "host")
  • She is clearly the "chef" and this man is more of a helper and person to ask questions
  • The title of the show is in French (obviously) and i think it translates into something like "second helping" or "second serving" or something along those lines

Any ideas??

Coincidence?

While shopping at Shoppers Drug Mart today to buy some Tampax Tampons, I see these hanging in the middle of the shelf....

Coincidence? I think not.

Jumping on the bandwagon

Ok, BIG SURPRISE!

i'm jumping on the de-lurker bandwagon because i'm a follower and she did, and she did, and i'm sure some of my other bloggy friends did, but my google reader can be slow to update sometimes and anyway, i want to be just like them as much as possible.

I have to say, i used to lurk around the blogosphere quite a bit myself. One person described how i felt perfectly: "I never thought bloggers thought much about comments from readers they don't know personally. I follow about 25 blogs daily and I don't think I've commented once on any of them. You guys seem so untouchable. Even smaller bloggers seem to know the blog celebrities in the real world. It's like you're all part of the cool club but you let us less cool people listen in on the fun. I guess thats why I've never delurked before. The less cool aren't supposed to interupt the club's conversations..." - "Becky"

That's exactly how i felt. But then i started to feel like i "knew" the blogger and i started leaving small comments like "cool pic" etc. etc. Now i try to comment as much as possible, but i try not to leave fluff. I like to be able to give my opionion or, if it's a really good bloggy friend, encouragement when they need it.

I'm not really putting the pressure on the few people who lurk here. Hell, i know Mat is one of them!! But it would be nice to "meet" you. Don't you want to be my bloggy friend?? No? ok, then *sob*. Just kidding...but i DID make it easier for you to comment. I opened it up to everyone - not just blogger / blogspot people! No excuses people, NO EXCUSES!
p.s. did you see the awesom-o button on my right side bar? isn't it perrrrrrty?

what i've been up to and what i like to do

Hello Jello!

Sorry (again) for being MIA. I've been up to a few things.

Last week i had this burning desire to do a puzzle. I don't know why i wanted to do a puzzle so bad since i think i've only ever done one puzzle before in my whole life. But i felt like it so i went to the store and bought a $10 puzzle and worked on it non-stop until it was finished for 2 days. I will post pics of it soon!

My mumma is visiting me this week. It's her birthday on Saturday and i invited her to come to Ottawa to see the Phantom of the Opera. So she came up a week early (since she's retired) to visit, and make my front lawn into a garden. I love putting my retired mother to work!

So in preparation for her arrival, Mat and i have been busing completing the guest room. It. looks. awesome. if i do say so myself. I also took pics of it and will post soon.

I know you're all dying to see photos of the go-onings this week and last and i promise i will get them up soon and by soon i mean when i feel like getting off my lazy ass and uploading them to the computer because i need the space back on the memory card.

So for now, i thought it would be fun to play a game. Feel free to play along. It can be quite humorous!

The Game:

Go to google and type your name and "likes to" in quotations. eg: "Tom likes to". Write copy and paste the first 10 things that come up.
  1. Roz likes to travel light and seize the moment
  2. Roz likes to think of it as a modern day Bill Withers or Hall and Oats
  3. Roz likes to show patients what she's learned and would be happy to meet with you
  4. Roz likes to look for information and then organize it in a useful manner
  5. Roz likes to make out in my living room and then tell me i should mack it!
  6. Roz likes to supervise her "dad's" work
  7. Roz likes to keep herself groomed
  8. Roz likes to tell the stories about the animals that appear from thin air, strange spiritual presences, and how "weird things happen around here"
  9. Roz likes to have her picture taken
  10. Roz likes to meow at us in a grumpy way and i meow right back

ok, so some of them i just don't get, but a few of them are kinda funny. What do "you" like to do?

Slow Me Down

That's the name of a new song by Emmy Rossum.

Not only do i love it, but it's exactly how i've been feeling these last few weeks. Maybe that's the reason for me loving it...i dunno.

You can hear a short clip of it on her myspace here: http://www.myspace.com/emmyrossum

She's putting out an itunes bundle on July 31st with this song and 2 others as well as an 18 minute documentary on the making of the album.

My excitement may or may not have something to do with the fact that my brother is the producer of this album and co-wrote all of the songs as well as mixed and engineered them. (sorry if that's not 100% factual, but that's what i understand).

*insert proud little sister grin here*

Let me know what you think of the songs :)

Sometimes, you have to hoooold it a little bit to make sure everything goes down.

Use it so i don't vomit when i need to use the bathroom.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thank you.

SORRY Michelle

i'm going to "reply" to someone's comment on a comment that i left on another person's blog. I would like to post a comment right back on the blog, but that's not fair to the blogger.

I know this person who left a comment probably won't see this, but like i said, i don't want to start an argument on someone else's blog.

So here's the situation: You can read the original post here, but basically she wrote about how she found a small child left alone and locked inside a minivan on a hot day and how she confronted the parent.

To which i commented:

"oooo….that sort of thing makes me SO. MAD.!. argh. I’m mad just sitting here reading about it.I would have had a LOT more to say to that woman. Like “are you f#*%&^! kidding me???!!”But that’s just me…the kind of person who gives people dirty looks (and occasionally says something) when they park in a handicap spot when they are CLEARLY not handicapped!"

Anyway, i like to check the comments often to see what other people think and i find THIS:

"I just want to make a quick comment to Roz. Not all handicaps are visible and you shouldn’t assume that they don’t need to park there. As long as they have a sticker - assume they have it for a reason. That’s all."

"That's all" ???

Michelle, you don't know me. I don't know you. I'M SORRY that i didn't spell out every. single. word. and every. single. possible. situation.

First of all Michelle, i know aaalllllll about people with handicaps that aren't visible, i don't need a lecture from you about how not all handicaps are visible. My grandmother-in-law is legally blind and doesn't have a white cane, but does have a handicap sticker for her car thankyouverymuch.

Second of all, i was trying to express myself, don't take things so literally...sheesh.

Third of all, OBVIOUSLY if i saw a handicap sticker in someone's window, i would assume that they have it for a reason, and i wouldn't give them a dirty look. I kinda thought that was "assumed".

Lastly, i would like to say, that even when people do have stickers, it's not always for them, but for someone in their family who is disabled (am i even allowed to use that term? Probably not...) who isn't with them, but they figure since they have the sticker, that they can still use the spot.

Believe me. It happens. Yes....it does. I've witnessed it.

And the worst thing about these people is that they should be the FIRST ones not to use a handicap spot if they don't need to.

Let me ask you dear readers...who among you are tired of being so PC in every situation? Who is tired of wondering what someone might think of you as a person because you used an "incorrect term"? Does every comment or conversation or observation have to be 100% politically correct?

Shit!

It's probably one of the worst things that can happen to you.

Especially if you’re at work (!)

Oh man, the signs were there….the floor was wet, there was some T.P on the floor, but I really. had. to. go.

So I ignored the signs, and I went.

Big mistake.

BAD mistake.

The toilet overflowed!

Apparently the toilet was still angry from being plugged up before, and it overflowed again when I flushed it.

I stood there starring at it in disbelief and shock.

What was I going to do?

*blink*

*blink*

I turned off the light and opened the door slightly to see if anyone was in the hall...

All clear.

I left, and closed the door quietly behind me.

That’s what I was going to do.
